Master Bedroom Refresh

Six years ago, my husband, Nick, and I purchased a beautiful 100-year-old home the summer we were engaged. That whole summer before I moved in, I jumped into making that home our own. I’m grateful that the previous owners had made major updates to the house including the most daunting updates like the kitchen, bathrooms, plumbing, and electrical. All we had to do was paint. So, that’s how I found myself spending most of the summer - painting every square inch of that big ol’ house.

Because we didn’t have any kids yet, the space I put the most thought into when it came to paint color was our master bedroom. I chose something pretty bold. It may have been the excitement of that new season I was entering into…being a new wife, moving to a new town, making new friends…I don’t know, I just felt brave that summer. Some of my paint choices reflected that new excitement and boldness for life. I’d always pick neutrals and chose to add color with my decor. But not for this room.  No. I went with not one, but two shades of green. On the main walls I painted a deep green, and inside the wall molding around the walls was a slightly lighter shade of the same green. Don’t get me wrong, I actually really loved the happy colors on my wall. They weren’t too bright or juvenile. They were indeed a reflection of my outlook on life at that time. A “You Only Live Once” type of mentality. I have no regrets for that particular color choice, and honestly, all of the bold choices I made that season are some of the best decisions I’ve ever made for myself and family.

As the next few years passed, babies and businesses filled up our time. We had two baby girls what felt like back-to-back and Nick and I were growing our own individual businesses. Suddenly life was very full and very busy. Our home was always our haven in the midst of our fast paced lives. It has always been filled with peace and joy. It’s the place we rested and realigned our sights, but the increasing busyness of life had me longing for less stuff, peaceful playlists, cozier furniture, calmer colors. So, when I found myself pregnant with our third child, I decided it was time to make some changes. I started with our master bedroom.

The first thing I changed was the wall color. We went with “Incredible White” by Sherwin Williams. It’s a deep white with a noticeable amount of tone to it. I painted the walls and trim that same color. I’ve been loving the result of painting floor boards, crown molding and any other trim accent all the same color as the walls. The result is a seamless backdrop where your eye can flow freely and isn’t stopping and starting from different colored walls and trim.

The next thing we saved for and invested in was a new bed. We had started our marriage off in a queen sized bed in a bulky and high off the ground frame. But after our babies learned to walk, more often than not, they’d find themselves in bed with us. We love it. But we decided it was time to upgrade to a king size bed and to find something our small children could get in and out of without much trouble. We went with this bed from CB2, and honestly, it has been one of the best purchases we’ve made in our marriage. With a low to the ground design, sleek frame and upholstered headboard, it somehow makes our room look more spacious though it is larger than the bed before. The low to the ground frame is much easier for the girls to get in and out of.

Finally, after finding a cozy oversized rug to fill up the room, I toned down the decor with a monochromatic theme, chose soft tones and fabrics, long linen curtains, warm wood tones, brass accents, baskets, and vintage art that brings me a whole lot of joy.

I am really happy with how the space turned out. It’s like a second family room for us. It’s where we talk about the day with our children, read the Bible and pray, and then, often end our nightly routine with a “performance” by the girls where our bed is their stage. Nick and I watch, give a rousing applause, and then send them off to their own beds knowing full well they’ll be sneaking back in our bed in just a few hours. We love how our master bedroom better serves our family now and provides us with another space to rest, recuperate, thrive and grow as a family.

I hope you like this makeover and found a little inspiration for your own space!

Love,
Mandy
